If an individual is employed or enrolled in a college or university at any time while his/her license is suspended, [s]he may apply for a special RESTRICTED driver's license permitting the individual to drive only to and from work or place of education.

The individual must supply the Department proof of employment or enrollment in school. The individual must live further than one (1) mile from the place of employment or educational facility. This license can be issued only if adequate public transportation is not provided.

Fee: $20 for each special restricted license, including a reissue caused by changes in the place and hours of employment , education, or residence. THE OPERATION OF A MOTOR VEHICLE OUTSIDE THE RESTRICTED LICENSE IS CONSIDERED A VIOLATION

RESTRICTED LICENSE - Eligible Offenses:

Simple Possession of Marijuana/Hashish
   - suspension 6 months

Any Other Controlled Substances
   - suspension 1 year

Lend D.L. or Personal I.D. For Misuse
   - suspension: 1st - 90 days & 2nd - 6 months

False Name/Address Used to Acquire D.L.
   - suspension: 1st - 90 days & 2nd - 6 months

Purchasing Alcoholic Beverages For Underage Person
   - suspension: 1st - 90 days & 2nd - 6 months

Transfer or Gift of Alcohol to Minor
   - suspension: 1st - 90 days & 2nd - 6 months

Minor in Possession of Beer or Liquor
   - suspension: 1st - 90 days & 2nd - 6 months

Driving Under the Influence
   - suspension: 1st - 90 days & 2nd - 6 months


provisional licenses

A person with a South Carolina driver's license who is or has been convicted of DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE 1st OFFENSE, and whose license is not presently suspended for any other reason, may apply for a provisional license.

The director of the Department or his disignee determines whether or not a provisional driver's license may be issued.

Fee: $5 for a PROVISIONAL license after the individual has provided proof of SR-22 insurance and enrollment in an Alcohol and Drug Safety Action Program. THE PROVISIONAL DRIVER'S LICENSE IS NOT VALID FOR MORE THEN SIX (6) MONTHS FROM THE DATE OF ISSUE SHOWN ON THE LICENSE.

PROVISIONAL LICENSE - Eligible Offenses:

       -- 1st - 6 months
       -- 2nd - 1 year
       -- 3rd - 3 years
       -- 4th - permanently
