recycling
did you know?
We receive many calls concerning the collection of can tabs for charity. We discourage the collection of tabs for charity as loose tabs are unsafe for animals and children. Buy-back centers pay by the pound for aluminum, so contrary to popular belief, the tabs are not worth more than the can. For example, 100 tabs are worth less than a dime, 100 whole cans would bring in over $3.

getting started

The City of Greenville collects recyclables from the curb once a week on your scheduled collection day. Please place your bin at the curb by 7 a.m. each day and remove after service. In case of rain, please hold your paper-based recyclables until the next week, is possible. We do not accept plastic bags. Please rinse all containers before placing them in the bin.

Items collected curbside include:

  • mixed paper (magazines, bulk mail, phone books, newspapers, etc.)
  • cardboard. Please flatten boxes and remove all non-paper packaging such as Styrofoam. No pizza boxes accepted.
  • paperboard. No wax covered paper accepted, such as orange juice or ice cream containers.
  • aluminum cans
  • steel cans
  • glass jars and bottles (clear, brown, blue and green). No ceramic items, no window glass, no drinking glasses or mirrors . Including these items can ruin an entire load of glass.
  • all plastic bottle and jugs. We do not accept plastic bags or wide-mouth containers such as yogurt cups, butter tubs or take-out boxes.

Garbage carts, recycling bins and bulk waste should be out at the curb no earlier than 12 hours before collection day and all City containers must be returned to the rear of the structure within 24 hours of collection.
