Included is a 35,000 square foot Publix grocery store, which will fill a need for conveniences as the number of downtown residents continues to rise. Also in the development are plans for an office supply store, 272 apartment units, 22 condominiums, and additional retail space. The Croft Company is developing the 40 stadium flats on South Main Street for urban dwellers. Retail, restaurant, and office space is available through Centennial American Properties. Kroc Center
Last summer, the Salvation Army Kroc Bequest donated $46.2 million to Greenville for a state-of-the-art community center. The center is being planned for land next to South Academy Street, near the end of West Camperdown Way. Currently the community is raising additional money to support operations. Planned facilities include a 32,000 square foot aquatics center, multipurpose athletic fields, tennis courts, and a junior golf training facility. Groundbreaking is planned for summer 2006. As a result of the center, over 100 jobs will be generated and the surrounding area will be strengthened.
Retail Growth
Downtown Greenville continues to draw a high number of professionals. Within a 5 mile radius of downtown, its daytime population totals more than 116,000. The area’s retailers and restaurants are an important draw for this group as they eat lunch, meet for coffee, entertain guests, and shop for sundries during the main working hours each day. “Our location in the heart of downtown has helped make us the ‘destination’ store. Our customer mix includes local residents, tourists, business people, convention attendees, and those who come to our city festivals. Our store has also helped establish a family atmosphere in downtown. We have far exceeded our business plan for the first year. We continue to grow as surrounding communities are attracted to our now well-known downtown.”

News From the Downtown Business Association
The Downtown Business Association (DBA) is a group of business/property
owners and residents in the Downtown area that is interested in issues that
affect the Central Business District. Our primary goals are to communicate
common issues and concerns that need addressing by City Staff, offer
networking opportunities for our membership and assist in the development of
a comprehensive marketing plan for our Downtown Community.
The DBA is managed by a group of 22 directors with various backgrounds who
meet on the second Tuesday of each month and who have a passion for Downtown
Greenville. Currently, our general membership is approximately 165
individuals and businesses and we would welcome the opportunity to further
discuss the cost and the benefits of your membership. Our Membership Chair
is Jane Greer and she can be reached at 232-8301 or jgreer233@aol.com.
We have scheduled four general membership meetings for 2006 and they will be
held at the Hyatt or the Westin Poinsett in March,May,September and
November. We will have programs of interest to the Downtown area to be
announced and it offers a great opportunity to network. We are also working
with the retailers and restaurants on requesting Accommodation Tax funds and
the implementation of a Business Improvement District in order to help fund
the overall marketing of the Downtown experience.
Additionally, we will be attending City Council, Design and Preservation
Committee and Board of Zoning Appeals Meetings to provide information and
feedback to our membership through a monthly Newsletter. The Newsletter will
also contain information of interest from our monthly Director's meeting on
what is happening downtown and discuss the relevant topics du jour on issues
that affect Downtown residents and businesses.
If you have been a member previously or are new to the area, please contact Jane
Greer and join our group. This is a new DBA and we value your thoughts and opinions on issues as we move forward.
Join Us! The Downtown Business Association's first general membership meeting of 2006 is at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 28, at the Westin Poinsett Hotel.
