Epidemiology of HIV/AIDS

  • Statewide 13,577 cases have been reported, and locally, the 7-county area reports that approximately 2,053 people are living with HIV/AIDS.
  • Minorities, especially African-American males between the ages of 20-39, and
    persons living in the southeastern region, are the highest reported cases.

  • The Upstate Area ranks 62nd with a case rate of 10.9%.
  • African-American females of all ages and white males between the ages of 16-22 represent the fastest growing group affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • The Centers for Disease Control estimates that 47% of new cases among this age group are females.

 


The Centers for
Disease Control in Atlanta indicates between 800,000 and 900,000 persons are infected each year.
