Streetscapes

Streetscape Projects
South Laurens Streetscape ProjectSouth Laurens is a relatively small (450 l.f.) downtown street that needed a face lift. It’s positioned one block west of Main St. and bordered between McBee Ave. and Washington St. Conflicts between new development opportunities, parking, lighting, delivery vehicles, pedestrian issues, and landscaping necessitated change. We have addressed these issues with a comprehensive plan that increased on-street parking, landscaping, sidewalks, lighting, stormwater runoff and street furniture. This project was a complete in-house design & build project. We also experimented with a new product, Silva Cells, to improve urban tree and stormwater performance.
Sterling High School Statue in Downtown GreenvilleStatues
Sterling High School Statue & Plaza: Located at the historic northwest intersection of Main St. and Washington St. The memorial was completed in Spring of 2007. The sculptor was Maria J. Kirby-Smith of Camden, SC. The City provided design & construction coordination with the Project Team.

The Charter for Sterling High School was received from the South Carolina Secretary of State in 1896. As the First Black High School in Greenville County, the record of Sterling High School is that of Struggle and Triumph. The Students of Sterling High School were the driving force that promoted the change of institutional segregation in Greenville County. For a period of nearly seventy-five years, Sterling High School students descended the front steps of their beloved alma mater and stepped into the world to make it a better place for us all.

Wayfinding SignWayfinding
A comprehensive City-wide Wayfinding program was completed in summer ofCity Limits Welcome Sign 2007. The goal of the program was to identify important destinations throughout the City and develop a network of signage that assisted drivers in locating their place of interest.

Examples of destinations include the Peace Center, BI-LO Center, The Drive Stadium, Carolina First Center, Heritage Green, and many more. We also completely renovated every City Limit sign. In total, we have installed over 150 signs throughout the City of Greenville. This project was a team effort between various City departments and divisions.
